One of the most unique features of Hiro is its sophisticated recommender system module which seamlessly combines content-based and collaborative filtering approaches to recommend items (for example, events, blog articles, books etc.) to users. The content-based approach applies standard information retrieval techniques such as lexical analysis, stopword removal, stemming and term weighting to any textual data while the collaborative filtering approach gathers explicit (for example, a user gives a book 5 stars) or implicit (for example, a user shows interest in an event by signing up for it) votes from users. Either the vector space model or its popular extension, latent semantic indexing can be used.
